A Beacon of Hope on Willis Avenue

The Bronx Charter School for Children, located at 388 Willis Avenue, in the Mott Haven neighborhood is often spoken about by parents as a “beacon of hope” in the South Bronx. Known as The BCSC Difference, our team delivers a holistic approach that ensures children can reach their full potential.

We work with all children to give access to what they need to lift out of poverty.

We foster academic excellence as well as making sure we meet our families’ needs beyond the classroom.

We nurture the whole child. We enhance our strong academic program with social-emotional support for scholar success.

Our academic program reflects the practices that are associated with high-performing urban schools: more time on task; standards-based instruction; research-based curricula; regular assessments; nightly homework; and horizon-broadening enrichment opportunities.

Our goal is to make an impact on the neediest families in Bronx Community School District 7. Many of our students are challenged by homelessness, learning English as another language, immigration issues, economic and food insecurity, among other issues.

Yet, our scholars come to school every day, ready to learn and succeed.

Parent Praise

This school year will be the fourth year that my children are attending The Bronx Charter School for Children. My son is in the fourth grade and my daughter is in the third grade. Having to send my children to a charter school as opposed to a public school in my district was an easy decision. The public schools were overcrowded, understaffed, which I feel leads to teachers being overwhelmed and underperforming. I wanted my children to be in an environment where they had the opportunity to get to know their teachers, and the teachers could get to know them. If the teachers don’t have a real understanding of my children and how they learn, I can’t see how they could set realistic expectations for them. Since my children have started attending TBCSC, I can say that I am proud of how things worked out for them.

Initially, I can honestly say that I underestimated this school. People told me that it was a poor choice to send my children to a school in the South Bronx. However, I am so glad that I did not allow others to make any decisions for me because it was the BEST decision I ever made. The staff at the school are so welcoming. I can call the school at any time and know that someone was going to assist me with a great attitude (which is difficult to come by in many schools). The teachers there are truly amazing. What I love the most about the teachers is their ability to communicate with me. The teachers have included me in their class. I am well-informed on what my children are learning; they provide additional information so that I can help them at home, and most importantly, they have gone above and beyond to ensure they do all they can to make my children successful. I have developed a trusting relationship with my children’s teachers. This is not an easy task to do, but they have never made me feel like an overbearing parent. The teachers at this school applaud my involvement and encourage it. Year after year, it makes me feel good to know that my children are in good hands.

"I had a great experience at TBCSC. The teachers and staff all care for my children, both for my youngest son, who is in second grade and for my high school senior when he attended several years ago. The attentiveness the school provides is a large part of why my eldest has excelled throughout middle and high school. At his high school, he achieved the highest scores on the SAT exam and is ready for college next year. I know the education he received at TBCSC set him on a solid footing and feel confident the same will happen for my youngest."
